HISTORY OF THE AMSTERDAM LIDO
For many people, the Lido is a household name in Amsterdam. The history of the building goes back to 1884, but it was only in 1933 that hospitality tycoon Charles Winkels put it on the map as a restaurant with a terrace on the water. This was a great success, until it closed in 1963. From the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies, the Lido became the venue for the Amsterdam Student Union. Despite several attempts, the old grandeur was not restored in the years that followed. Finally in 1991 the building was transformed by Holland Casino into a new complex with the Lido Club. Now Lido is presented again as a Grand Cafe on the water.
